Back on September 11, 1992, Nirvana was deep in the aftermath of the one-year-old Nevermind. When they headed back to their native Seattle for a homecoming gig, MTV News showed up to interview some ecstatic fans, as well as members of Kurt Cobain’s family. As Stereogum points out, footage has now surfaced.

Eerily, when Cobain’s mother Wendy O’Connor is asked how she feels about her son’s success, she says, “I have mixed emotions about it. Because I’m glad that he made enough of a success to make a living, but some of it is too much for him, I think. For all of us, really, it’s a little overwhelming.” (Watch that section at the 9:22 mark.)

Sub Pop confirms that one of the fans interviewed was an extremely young-looking Phil Elverum of Mount Eerie and the Microphones. That’s him on the right, at the 1:50 mark. 

When the journalist asks Elverum and a friend whether or not they’re bothered by Nirvana’s massive fame, he says, “Yeah, kinda” before darting away from the camera.
